Our Team

We have fully qualified Montessori teachers who also have an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and the English National Curriculum.

The Head of School, Yemi Afolabi, has been involved in Mace Green Gables since 2005. She taught children across all age ranges at the school and then, was a Deputy Head of School before being appointed Head from January 2017.

Yemi holds a B.Sc (Hons) in Mathematics/Statistics, the International Montessori Diploma for birth-12 year old, Early Years Professional Status (EYPS) and an M.A in Curriculum, Pedagogy and Assessment from the University College London.

All of our staff are DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) checked upon joining the company.

Staff ratios are 1:3 for 0-2 year olds, 1:4 for 2-3 year olds and 1:8 for 3-5 year olds.

Our Values

Mace Green Gables Montessori Schools is committed to delivering exceptional standards of care and education.

As the children progress they are offered more individualised instruction which establishes a close connection between the child and Directress. There is emphasis throughout the curriculum on working with and handling the carefully constructed materials; thus making it a very concrete learning experience before allowing the children to develop a more abstract understanding.

We provide a safe and secure environment.

Mace Green Gables is approved by OFSTED / CSIW (in Wales).

Our staff are fully qualified and given support to further develop their education and training.

Benefits

The Elementary programme is for children aged from 6 -12, Year 1 – Year 6. Our classrooms allow for no more than eighteen to twenty students. Our reception class will have no more than twenty students with a qualified Montessori teacher and a classroom assistant.

Children at this level are ready to explore the world. Maria Montessori believed that it was important to start the exploration with the big picture and then to move to the details. Her lessons on how the Earth and its inhabitants began and moved through time are impressionistic and leave the child with the desire to learn more. At the same time the curriculum is rich with materials that explore math, language, science, zoology, botany, history and geography.

Lower Elementary is a three year cycle for the 6 to 9 year olds (year 1-3). Upper Elementary is a three year cycle for the 9-12 year olds (year 4-6).

During the Elementary years, the child shifts from concrete, sensorial exploration to an ever-expanding global vision. The Elementary student is beginning to see the interconnectedness of all things. The Montessori curriculum, an individualized and respectful environment, and specialized materials all support the student’s desire for exploring their world.

Dr. Montessori’s five Great Lessons are the essential underpinnings of the Elementary curriculum and demonstrate the interrelatedness of all things. The five stories of the Great Lessons are integrated into the curriculum to pique the children’s interest, capture their imagination, and arouse their natural curiosity.

Standards

A safe, secure environment is obviously of great importance to any parent leaving their child in a nursery or school setting.

The school’s aim is to offer an inclusive and caring environment that values the uniqueness of your child, nurtures their individual needs and helps them achieve their academic potential through the Montessori Method. The school ensures that every classroom has a fully trained Montessori teacher.

Health and safety is very important to us. We ensure that our nursery provides a safe environment for all children, parents and staff. Our nursery staff receives regular training and updates on health and safety issues and each nursery has a health and safety co-ordinator.

Play

Play is central to a child’s learning.

“Discovery is far more than a means to livelihood, far more than a spice of life. Discovery is the ultimate of human achievement. Discovery is thrill, excitement and euphoria. Discovery is the difference between victory and defeat between satisfaction and disappointment, between success and failure. Discovery is the prime goal of every true research scientist, every explorer of the great unknown.”

– from The Art Of Discovery, by J Oliver

Play is the opportunity to discover and is consequently central to a child’s learning. It contributes to development of feelings, ideas and imagination, relationships, abstract ways of thinking including the moral and spiritual self.

As such, at Mace we recognise the importance of giving children the time to play and it is, in fact, one of the strengths of the Montessori method that children explore their environment independently and progress at their own speed. The specialised Montessori materials are designed to encourage children’s natural curiosity and to allow them steady progress. Thus, as they play in our nursery, carefully and gently guided by our staff, you will find that your children are not only having fun but learning as well.

Educationalists now recognise the prime importance of play for children’s development. Indeed, some researchers believe that play and laughter actually “fertilise” the brain. Play is also believed to be very important as an antidote to “over-occupied” childhoods, where children take on too many formal organised activities (ballet, football, rugby, learning new language, etc) to leave enough time for playing.
